Drew Brophy’s Covid Comeback: From Paralysis to Surfing More Waves Again
In late 2021, world‑renowned surf artist Drew Brophy became critically ill with the Delta strain of Covid. He was hospitalized, placed in the ICU, and his wife, Maria was told to say goodbye through a window. It was an unthinkable situation.

Drew and Maria then spent 70 grueling and life threatening days with Drew breathing with a ventilator while they fought for his life, moment by moment. At one point, his medical team gave him only a small chance of making it through the week and yet, Drew, his family, and community kept believing he would come home and surf again; his doctors describe his survival as unlike anything they thought possible. No one survived from this.
Drew ultimately spent months in the hospital, much of that time in a coma and on life support and he lost about 100 pounds and flirted with the "other side". When he miraculously woke up, he had to relearn how to communicate, move, breathe on his own, and rebuild his strength from the ground up. Through the love of his wife, Maria and his family, dedicated medical care, and his fierce determination, he began the long road of rehabilitation by utilizing every biohacking tool and technique available.
Maria tells their story in her inspirational memoire, Covid A Love Story, written in such a beautiful and insightful way that leaves the reader with the knowledge and hope to also overcome seemingly impossible medical odds.
Drew Brophy is simply a miracle.

As he continues that journey at home to this day, Drew integrates Wave Therapy to support his ongoing recovery—helping his body manage inflammation, pain, and fatigue so he can continue surfing in the ocean that he loves. “I recently pulled my shoulder surfing and as soon as I got home, I put on the machine to speed up my healing. I love the way Wave Therapy makes me feel. It’s relaxing and I can feel my muscles and my whole body recovering at hyper speed so I can get back out there,” Drew said.
Today, Drew is back on his surfboard, paddling out and riding waves again—a living example of what we mean at CuraWaves when we say “Be a Miracle.” His story reminds us that healing is rarely linear. It is the combination of the right energy medicine, the power of love, innovative tools, and a powerful will to live that opens the door for miracles.
